So I agree that the film makers should have done something new with Toby instead of him just breaking dishes and closing doors until he gets bored and snaps someones spine. What I enjoyed about the first films was the concept of an unseen enemy, a foe you cannot defend yourself against and could show up anywhere at any time. These guys don’t leave their cameras on all the time which means some of the scares could come out of nowhere, unlike previous films where there was always a build-up.īut what boggles my mind is that the Demon (or Toby as it was called in PA3) never really shows up in this film at all. Some of that isn’t a bad thing, for example this film dumped the whole “Night 1” and “Night 27” nonsense that got old in the 4th film. However a lot of what defines a Paranormal Activity film is missing from this installment. In a sense I agree, since repeating the first film 4 more times would be extremely boring and even condescending. Some reviewers say they like it because it’s different and not the same boring act repeated for the 5th time. She can probably feel his body ‘acting’ right now.Īpart from that I can’t really say I enjoyed the film. This is also impressive since many members of the cast were inexperienced so it does impress me that they weren’t over-the top. None of the actors or actresses really blew me away or anything, but they played their pats well without overdoing anything. I will also say that the film was cast decently. The stupid things these guys do are easily explained: They are dumb young adults doing dumb young adult things, which removes a lot of the frustration I have with most horror films.

Plus, having the main characters in this age group meant we weren’t dealing with annoyingly young teenage characters or adults making stupid horror movie decisions. They are pretty funny and their antics at the beginning are actually quite humourous. I will admit that the characters were more likeable in this film than they have been in the last few. But how is it as a movie experience? Well… So for fans of the series, this is still a ‘must watch’ if for no other reason than to explain some of the story. However, it does overlap with the previous films in a couple of ways and does answer a few questions that the franchise had yet to answer.
Basically, the film does not revolve around Katie’s family or, in the case of the 4th film, feature Katie in any sort of important role. In an effort to save him, Hector and another friend Marisol (Walsh) start investigating the strange occurrences and uncover several unsettling things centering on a certain witches coven.Ī common question about this film is ‘How is it a spin-off?’ which is an understandably confusing term for a film franchise. He starts behaving with malice and violence. However, Jesse’s personality begins to change, he becomes moody and sullen. Jesse soon finds that he has developed several super-human abilities (nothing quite as dramatic as Chronicle but super-human nonetheless).
However, the camera does not pick up whether Jesse or some other force was responsible for this sudden protection. After a few days of using the camera to film Jackass type stunts and other odd behavior, Jesse and Hector are confronted by two thugs, but suddenly the thugs are knocked out after being brutally tossed around. Jesse (Jacobs) is a recent high school graduate and his friend Hector (Diaz) begins filming the (inevitable) after party. The film centers on a group of Latino teens living in an apartment complex in Oxnard, California. This worried me but I was hoping new life could be breathed into the franchise. Apparently the logic behind this film was “This franchise is very popular with the Latino community so….let’s make a Latino Paranormal Activity!” After the executives were busy patting each other on the back they decided this film wouldn’t be a sequel OR prequel but more of a spin-off. However, Paranormal Activity 4 was a downer and I have to admit I was very skeptical about hearing about this film. Therefore, I always give each film a chance, hoping they will give me the same pleasure.
